Pavement Ants

Identification

A.K.A:

Sugar ants or ‘piss’ ants

Size: 4 – 10mm (grain of rice)
Color: Pale brown or black
Body: Three segmented club in each antenna

In many Canadian homes, pavement ants are present. They are tolerable and not aggressive, but they can also be a pain to have. As the name implies, they can be commonly seen on the pavements, driveways, and sidewalks. They can also thrive near heating sources, especially during the winter season. You can also commonly see these ants in the kitchen, foraging food, which is one of the most common reasons why people would want to get rid of them.

Identification:

There are many types of ants that are common in Canada, making it confusing to identify what specifically is the type that you have at home. To identify pavement ants, you should be familiar with its basic characteristics. Their color ranges from pale brown to black, with legs that are lighter compared to the color of their body. They are medium-sized, usually anywhere from 4 to 10mm. They also have three-segmented club in each antenna.

Behaviors:

One thing that is common in this type of ants is their ability to form large trails and gather as large colonies, sometimes, having as much as 10,000 workers. They thrive in different types of soil, such as loam and sand, although they like places that have minimal vegetation. They are considered as home invaders since you can commonly find them in walkways, patios, and sidewalks. They like sweets, which is why it is common for pavement ants to be seen rummaging on food.

Control & Prevention:

There are many solutions that can prove to be promising when it comes to dealing with ants. Among others, you can resort into taking advantage of a number of physical controls, which can include repairing and sealing visible cracks in your walls, pruning trees that are already overhanging, keeping the kitchen and other areas free from leftover food, keeping trash cans tightly-sealed, and keeping your place free from pet food.
